Policies covering use of LasDamas data by LasDamas participants.
Use of public data (e.g., released mock catalogs) is allowed without prior permission from the collaboration. When a paper is prepared, the author(s) should
- include an acknowledgment in the paper. A draft wording is listed below.
- notify the collaboration by sending an email to the lasdamas list that contains the title and authors of the paper. This is for record keeping.
Use of one simulation box is allowed without prior permission from the collaboration. The same acknowledgment and notification requirements apply to resulting publications, as with public data.
Use of a small number of simulation boxes is generally allowed with prior approval from the collaboration. A "small number of boxes" is loosely defined, but a good example would be one box per resolution (i.e., four total boxes). A decision on what constitutes a "small number" will be made on a case by case basis. The user(s) should announce this project prior to using the data and receive permission from the collaboration. The same acknowledgment and notification requirements apply to resulting publications, as with public data.
Use of many simulation boxes is generally considered to be a "LasDamas project". This means that the project should be announced very early so that LasDamas participants are able to sign on and collaborate on the project or request co-authorship. If no other LasDamas participants are interested in the specific proposed project, then it naturally falls under the category of "small number of boxes", listed above.
Policies covering use of LasDamas data by non-participants
LasDamas participants may not share proprietary data with non-participants without prior permission from the collaboration. If non-participants wish to use proprietary data (e.g., the halo catalog from one simulation box), they must state how they intend to use the data and request permission from the collaboration. Permission to share data may be given in certain cases, but only under the following conditions
- Permission may only be granted by unanimous consent within the collaboration.
- Permission will only be granted for the specific use stated.
- Non-participants getting access to proprietary data are forbidden from further sharing the data with other non-participants.
LasDamas participants reserve the right to request co-authorship on resulting papers.
- The same acknowledgment and notification requirements apply to resulting publications, as with public data.
Draft acknowledgment to be included in papers that use LasDamas data
The (mock catalogs/simulations/describe data here) were produced by the LasDamas project ( http://lss.phy.vanderbilt.edu/lasdamas/ ); we thank the LasDamas collaboration for providing us with this data.
